The remorseless revolution.

A few days ago, a special court in Gujarat pronounced death sentence to 38 out of 49 convicts in Ahemdabad bomb explosion which claimed 56 innocent lives besides injuring several. The 22 bombs which went off within 70 minutes were placed in buses, cars and parked cycles. Coincidentally, bicycle happens to be poll symbol of one of the regional political parties belonging to Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi party. Assembly election is going on in Uttar Pradesh along with four other states.

It can be clearly understood that in order to win over the popular support of people, echelons can form bunch of lies of which we are quite accustomed to. Sometimes, in expanding this bunch of lies, echelons can go to an extent to build castles in air by linking absurd connections. In one of the election rallies where prime minister of India Mr.Narendra Modi in order to join the dots between Ahemdabad bomb blast and poll symbol of the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh went on to question the ‘connection of cycles’ in both the scenarios which would otherwise seem impossible to connect. His attack on cycle evoked harsh responses from various political parties.

Cycle is a vehicle of poor who remains unaffected by the rise in fuel prices. Millions of Indians commute on bicycle on daily basis and consider it as their companion in troubling times. Personally speaking, I regularly pedal bicycle and for me it is a matter of pride that remaining unbothered about what society verbally hurls at me, I can proudly sit myself on my bicycle’s seat and ferry to my destination.

Several flagship programs initiated by different state governments bear the picture of bicycle in their logos. When on foreign tour, Indian PM can be seen riding bicycle along with his counterparts. When the scourge of climate change is befalling on the humankind, time and again it is echoed that motorized two-wheelers be replaced by bicycles for short distances as riders would remain physically fit and the burden on the environment regarding air pollution would see a decline, making the world a better place to live in.

By a guesstimate, around one billion people prefer bicycle over other means of transportation in meeting their demand of mobility meet. The importance of bicycle in 21st century can be clearly realised by the stats that the global cycle market size was valued at USD 59.33 billion in 2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CGAR) of 8.2% from 2022 to 2030. This stats bears the testimony to the fact that bicycle is the backbone of local transportation, particularly in rural India.

That linking bicycle with bomb blast and accusing opponents of being soft on terrorism reveal BJP’s political polemic where it tries every step feasible to retain power. The road to 2024 will go through Uttar Pradesh and BJP would never want to lose popular support in the politically most significant state of the country. The non-sensical statements as such should be avoided and the least the echelons can do is to bring in the real societal issues in poll fray.
