Furnishing the freebies.
A freebie scheme possesses the possibility to sway over the political environment of a constituency. It is the freebies by the virtue of which a political party can undoubtedly ensure the retention of its power or oust the sitting party off the power. The freebie culture is not a contemporary mouthwatering sop but a palatable gimmick which has had its existence since India's independence. The act of handing out freebies is sometimes thought as an infallible device used to mobilise popular support. The mandal commission, established in 1979 by the Janta government echoed the idea of 32% reservation to OBCs of jobs under the central government and PSUs. SC and ST are entitled to a reservation of 22% taking the tally upto 49%. Giving out freebies is a populist idea which burdens the economic foundation of a nation. The recent trend is no different from the previous ones. Nowadays political parties dole out freebies to make deep inroads into the political arena. AAP tops the list by meting out freebies like free power, free public transport ride to women of Delhi. Other political parties i.e, BJP and INC have also at times hitched up the same tactics to woo the voters. For long term development freebies could be tactless given the financial stress it imposes upon the tax paying citizens. If the money spent out in providing freebies were to be diverted towards development work,India would be better placed in GHI and HDI rankings. The current unemployment rate in India stands at 7.1%,displaying a dismal state of affairs. We Indians are competent enough to sustain a better life given that there's a thickness of employment opportunities. Freebies in short term may deliver on the lust of power but in long term it undermines accountability and promotes the idea of megalomania.
